BANGKOK — Thailand’s first local COVID-19 case after 100 days was found with the G strain of COVID-19, the same strain which is spreading worldwide, the Ministry of Public Health said on Friday.

According to epidemiological data, the G strain is easily communicable than the L and S strains, said Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Ministry’s Department of Medical Sciences. (Thailand-COVID-19)

KABUL — Six Afghan soldiers have been confirmed dead and five others injured as the Taliban insurgents attacked the national army checkpoints in Shirzad district of the eastern Nangarhar province on Friday, a statement of Defence Ministry released here said.

According to the statement, the Taliban militants stormed the checkpoints at 1:30 a.m. local time, killing six soldiers and injuring five others. (Afghanistan-Taliban-Attack)

HONG KONG — Hong Kong reported 12 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with two identified under a mass testing program, taking the total tally to 4,925.

Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection reported nine imported cases and three local ones at a press briefing on Friday. Of local infections, one was related to a previous case and the other two involved participants of the ongoing Universal Community Testing Program. (Hong Kong-COVID-19)

MANILA — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 252,964 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,040 new cases on Friday.

The DOH said the number of recoveries also rose to 186,606 after 566 more patients have recovered. (Philippines-COVID-19)

COLOMBO — The Sri Lanka Navy said on Friday that a three-member team had boarded the MT New Diamond oil tanker which caught fire in Sri Lanka’s eastern waters last Thursday to carry out an investigation after the fire had been completely doused.

The three-member team was from the salvor and they boarded the oil tanker after a six-member team from overseas also got aboard for inspection. (Sri Lanka-Oil Tanker-Fire) Enditem
