Former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs is all set for another coaching assignment as he has been appointed as the head coach of Colombo Kings (CK) for the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2020. Gibbs had reached Sri Lanka for commentary duties but has landed a coaching gig after CK started the hunt for a head coach.
The Colombo-based franchise had earlier appointed Dav Whatmore as their head coach. They inked on Kabir Ali after Whatmore, Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning coach, pulled out of the league. Kabir Ali was ruled out of LPL as he tested positive for COVID-19.
Finally, the management roped in Gibbs, who was in Sri Lanka. He will be assisted by Sri Lanka great, Rangana Herath. CK have a star-studded coaching set-up, which makes them one of the teams to watch out for.
An SA legend, Gibbs has been part of Sylhet Thunder in the Bangladesh Premier League as well. In 2018, he was one of the leading contenders for the job of head coach of the Indian women’s team. WV Raman was appointed the coach back then.
Gibbs, the only batsman to hit six sixes in ODIs, played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is. He scored 6167 runs in the longest format, which includes 14 centuries. In ODIs, he piled up 8094 runs at 36.13.
Herath, who captained Sri Lanka in five Tests, scalped 433 wickets in 93 Tests before retiring from international cricket in 2018.
The inaugural edition of LPL will be played from November 26 to December 16. The likes of Andre Russell, Shahid Afridi, Irfan Pathan and others are set to ply their trade in the T20 league.
Though the tournament has also been hit with pullouts as well. Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga, Liam Plunkett, Ravi Bopara are among players who have withdrawn from the tournament. In addition to that, Sohail Tanvir and Ravinderpal Singh tested positive for COVID-19 after landing there.
