Nov 21, Colombo: The Deputy leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ruwan Wijewardene said in Anuradhapura that he is committed to the party’s victory winning the confidence of the UNP members and protecting the party’s pride.

UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene stated this at a media briefing after a ceremony held today (21) to commence the reorganization of the United National Party at the district level in Anuradhapura.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Seedevi Hotel, Jayanthi Mawatha, Anuradhapura with the participation of many UNP organizers and their supporters in the Anuradhapura District.

“We commenced the reorganization of the UNP at the district and electorate levels in Anuradhapura today (21). We discussed this with the electoral organizers and activists of our party. Plans are afoot to reorganize the UNP at the village level, Wijewardene said speaking to the media.

“We also hope to take the party’s activities forward in consultation with all at a time when corona disease has spread. After Anuradhapura district we will go to Kandy district tomorrow. In this manner, it has been decided to meet the party’s organizers and activists covering all districts of the country and launch the party’s reorganization activities.

Our party members were disillusioned, especially when the election was lost. However, the UNP is still in the minds of the party members. We believe that the reorganization of the party will be able to proceed successfully.

I believe that we will be able to win the hearts and minds of the party members and build a great force in the future. That’s what we do. By 2025, we will come forward stronger, protect the dignity of the UNP and work for victory.

A change is needed in the face of the party. During the tenure of our government some injustice had been done to our party members. We have to accept that. Therefore, the party should be strengthened by winning the hearts of the party members again. By the end of December and the first week of January we will see the changes we are making in this party.

The UNP government reduced the burden of living for the people, provided a nutrition package to pregnant mothers. Health facilities were improved. But what has been done today.

First, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe helped the government to control the spread of corona disease. At that time Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe said to pay attention to the fishermen and the garment industry. But the government did not listen to what he said. Then the President said that he was the one who stopped everything. What has happened now?

At the last general election we did not get a mandate to go to Parliament. We were defeated. But there is a seat in the national list. We will discuss on Monday who will be given the seat. I also regret that a group from the opposition broke away and took seats in the government. We told our party members about this at the election. We have now decided to appoint a suitable candidate for the National List.

With the passing of the 20th Amendment there is a President with great powers. Similarly, the government has a two thirds majority in Parliament. However, the UNP is ready to work with all the opposition parties in Parliament to clash with that power,” said UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene.

Former UNP MPs and Ministers Palitha Range Bandara, Palitha Thewarapperuma, Saman Ratnapriya and Ranjith Samarasinghe and a number of activists from the Anuradhapura District were also present at the occasion. (Source: Lankadeepa)
