Honest, patient toil… South Africa should be in little doubt that this will be a key necessity by their bowlers if they wish for statistical success, slightly against the odds, on the two-Test tour of Pakistan shortly.

While there are merciful windows for exceptions, the broad trend in that country – which the Proteas last visited in 2007 – is for batsmen to prosper more notably than bowlers do on pitches notorious as “roads” a lot of the time.

Just for vivid example: in the last Test match completed at the Karachi National Stadium (where Quinton de Kock and company will play the first encounter from 26 January), the host nation revelled in the rare situation where their second innings was enormously more productive than their first.
